Description This new exhibit celebrated the museum’s 40th year. Precision manufacturing touches us all. From airplane parts to shopping carts, from computer chips to paper clips, our modern consumer culture is driven by the mass production of interchangeable parts. Ultimately, all of this interchangeability is made possible by machine tools: the power-driven machines that make metal parts to the most precise standards. In 1846, a technological revolution was underway in Windsor, Vermont. It was to be called armory practice, the American system of manufacturing or precision manufacturing, the production of parts so similar that they could be interchanged, one for another. While the idea of interchangeable parts did not originate in the Robbins & Lawrence Armory, it was this company which brought together the tools and refined the methods. Once demonstrated in Windsor, this new system of manufacturing would change the world.
